Wimbledon Themed Party

Monday, June 20th, 2011

kids_tennis

At this time of year the enthusiasm for tennis is high.  Everyone gets addicted to Wimbledon and all things tennis and all of our budding little Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams wannabes have nothing but tennis on their minds.  So if you are not a millionaire with your own tennis court and want to throw a wimbledon party for your child what do you do??

Invitations

Design the invite to look like an entry ticket. The perforations don’t have to be real, just draw them in.  Mention things  like Centre Court for the venue, dress code tennis whites etc.    On the day have a “turnstile” for entry (perhaps your side gate if you have one) and tear their “tickets” in half for authenticity.

The Party

Not many of us have a tennis court in our back garden but invest in a beach tennis set, they are pretty inexpensive.  If you can’t find one with a net, construct one out of a piece of clothes line or similar.  You only need something for them to aim over.  Use some strong white tape to set out simple boundaries for the court either on tarmac or grass, wherever you have the largest area.

Next you need a scoreboard.  Use a blackboard if you have one and if not use a large sheet of paper pinned to your shed or wall.  Play a round robin tournament so each child gets to play against everyone else and gets plenty of action.  When they are not involved in the match, let them take it in turns to be ball boys / girls, lines people or scorekeeper.  Best to have an adult as umpire.  Keep each match short, perhaps the best of three games.  Hold semi finals and a final and have some “trophies” and medals to give out.  You can give prizes for sportsmanship, best shot etc to make sure everyone gets a prize.

The Fare

You need to have lots of dainty sandwiches with the crusts cut off and of course strawberries and cream / ice cream!!!  Make up some diluted orange (it can be Robinsons to be authentic but unlikely anyone will notice) and chop lots of fresh summer fruits into it.  Get some plastic champagne glasses to serve.   For the cake, you can decorate a plain sponge cake to look like a tennis court with some food colouring and icing.

The Party Bags

A simple party bag could include a tennis ball, a headband or wristband and perhaps a medal for the tennis tournament!

And it’s game, set and party!

Cowboy Theme Birthday Party

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Cowboy Theme Party

If your little girl or boy loves playing cowboys or is a big fan of Woody and the gang from toy story, then a cowboy and cowgirl theme party could be the perfect option come borthday time!

Suprisingly easy to organise, their are plenty of food, games and ideas for your cowboy party that won’t break the bank!

Goody Bags

Be a little creative and you will find out that your gift bags will leave all your little cowbys and cowgirls smiling. Small plastic cowboys and horses can be purchased quite cheaply and make a great addition to the traditional giftbag trinkets such as sweets and any other small inexpensive toys.

Instead of using fancy paper bags for your goody bags, buy some inexpensive kid’s cowboy hats and fill them with the take home goodies. As an alternative to cowboys hats you can use bandanas and wrap up the goodies in it before tying a knot at the top.

Games

Horseshoe Game

A cowboy or cowgirl themed birthday party wouldn’t be a party without a game of horseshoes. Plastic horseshoe sets can be purchased quite cheaply from your local euro store or online and are safe for both indoor and outdoor play. If possible, purchase horseshoes in 2 different colours and divide your guests into 2 teams. On your whistle, both teams must throw at the same time with the winners being the highest scorers.

Five Second Gold Digger

Fill a bucket or large sack with dried beans and place some coins or toys in amongst the beans. Each guest now has 5 seconds to dig for their prize while blindfolded.

The 2 Step Cattle Drive

An outdoors game, cattle drive is great fun to play. Dedicate one area of the garden as a cattle pen line all of the kids up in rows of 4 at the opposite end of the garden. Between your guests and the cattle pen, tie or tape some balloons to the ground at various points. One of the guests is then blindfolded, spun around 3 teams and must now guide his cattle (the other guests) into the cattle pen using commands such as two steps left, two steps right, two steps forward trying to burst the balloons along the way.

Cowboy Food Ideas

Real cowboys and cowgirls cook all of their food outdoors so depending on the weather, a barbecue can be a great idea. Mini burgers, chicken and hot dogs are always big hits!

Cowboy Theme Birthday Cake Ideas

Make an ordinary 9 x 13 inch cake a very special birthday cake with a cowboy theme. You don’t have to be a professional cake decorator to create a cake kids will love. Simply top a frosted cake with a miniature plastic cowboy hat, and surround the hat with miniature plastic horses, cattle, and of course, cowboys. Optionally you can fill the brim of the hat with Jelly Belly jellybeans. The toys will serve as impressive cake decorations, and the kids can munch on the jelly beans while waiting for the cake. Your little cowboy will enjoy the cake decorations that double as bonus gifts after their cowboy theme birthday party is over.

Little Girls Birthday Parties On A Budget

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

girls party

With even more harsh financial cuts recently anounced by our wonderful Finance Minister, birthday party budgets are sure to be sacrificed by many parents . However that doesn’t mean that we have to skimp on birthday party fun!

The following are some quick hints and ideas for some birthday partu activites for a girls birthday party that will really help you stretch your budget.

First pick a location that is free. This could be your home, someone elses home or a local park. Most euro stores sell party decorations and favours, party balloons and party bags for a fraction of the cost of the party supply stores.

Make your own sundaes, cupcakes, mini pizzas and sandwichs and purchase party size bags of sugary treats from the euro store. Once emptied into a bowls nobody can tell the difference! Everyone likes to play the chef so allow the kids to create their own treats and decorate their own cupcakes!

For even more fun, turn this into a game and allow everyone to taste each other’s creations.

Movie theme night.

The girls can watch a favorite movie that they already own or you could rent a couple. You can make up games for after the movie like a trivia quiz and let the girls inner actress come out and have them act out their favorite scenes. Menu items can include popcorn, jellies and fizzy drinks just like at the cinema, but much less costly.

Spa & Beauty party.

Everyone likes to be pampered. The girls can give each other facials, manicures and pedicures. You can serve sparkling water in plastic champaign glasses (these can be found at the dollar store or a craft store in the wedding favors section) and fancy finger foods like chocolate dipped fruit that can be made ahead of time by cutting up fruit and dipping it in chocolate melted in the microwave.

Fashion Parade.

Make sure you have a camera for this one. Girls can bring over make-up and dress up clothes from home and switch them with others. Girls love to do each others make-up, and create outfits.

After they are all made over there could be a fashion show where they each get a chance to walk the runway (this could be a hallway). Food is usually a second thought when they are working on their creations so just putting out some snack foods like bowls of chips and fruit is usually enough.

Whatever theme you choose be prepared for the chaos of screaming girls and have plenty of help for the after party clean-up.

If you have any other great tips for girls parties on a budget we’d love to hear from you!

Outer Space Theme Party

Friday, September 10th, 2010

1077596_33402045

For a birthday party that’s truly out of this world, why not hold an outer space themed party. Not only are they great fun for all the guests but an outer space theme party can also be great fun when preparing for all the astronauts soon to be invading your plant!

The Preparation

Turning your house into outer space couldn’t be easier. With tin foil and cardboard you can easily create the planets and the stars which can be placed all around the walls along with blu-tak all centered around a bright yellow sun cut from craft paper.

This is a great activity to do with the kids and you can even write each of the guests names or stick the guest’s picture on each star and allow them to take their very own stars home with them.

The Games

An outer space theme party will allow you to play all of those favourite party classics by giving them a twist to match the occasion!

Zero-G Musical Chairs

Using suitably epic space music (think the Star Wars theme) all of the guests line up as normal except there can be no running…. each of the guests must space walk around the chairs!

Blast Off!

For this game you will need to have as many toilet paper cardboard inserts as you can get your hands on as well as some red and blue markers! Divide the guests in two and divide the cardboard inserts into two groups. The game starts with all of the guests decorating their teams cardboard inserts using the markers. Once coloured in, the teams must then race to build the tallest rocket possible without everything falling over. The winner is the team whose rocket is the tallest at the end of 10 minutes.

Planet Wars

Another great team game that is fun and cheap to organise but does require a sunny day! In planet wars you must tie or tape 9 white and 9 black balloons to an unshaded fence or wall at the base of your garden. Line the two teams up at the opposite end and decide which team is the white team and which is the black team.

The first guest from each team is given a large magnifying glass and on your marks the guest must run to the end of the garden and pop one of the other team’s balloons using the suns rays and the magnifying glass before running back to their team and handing the magnifying glass over to the next in line.

Party Food

Space and rocket themed cakes are readily available from most bakeries. However, you can add your own space themed goodies using stars and planets shaped cookie cutters to make cookies and snadwhichs. If money is no object and you really want to go that extra mile you can even buy actual dired astronaut ice cream! Check out NASA’s website for stockists!!

The Games
As well as the obvious game of football there are many other traditional party games that you can give a unique soccer twist to.
Penalty Shoot Out Comp
Line the kids up into two teams and set up a goal at one end of the garden (away from all windows!) using anything from jumpers to 2 broom handles placed into the ground. The goal of this game is to be the first team to score twenty penalties…. with no goal keeper in goal!
Sounds easy? Not quite!
When each penalty taker approaches the penalty spot they must be blind folded and spun around three times just to make things more difficult!
Pin The Tail
Bad weather ruining your chances of playing games outdoors? Then this variation on the classic children’s party game is sure to help bring your party to life. Cut the ball from a poster of your child’s favourite player and let all the party guests take turns trying to pin the ball in the right place.
The Road To Wembley
The Road To Wembley is a popular participation game played by Sky Sport’s Soccer Am TV show which can be easily adapted for your soccer theme party. Place a bin at the end of your garden or if possible, hang a tyre from a tree. The players line up in 2 teams at the opposite end of the garden and must try and kick the ball into the bin or through the tyre. The winners are the team that get the most balls into the target within 90 seconds. For more fun, bring multiple footballs and watch the craziness happen!
The Treats & Prizes
Whilst the half time orange slices are definitely a must, we all know that the kids have come expecting sweet treats! Football themes cakes are readily available and football team themed cakes are available in some Tesco bakeries. Another treat can double as your prizes for the games – chocolate medals!
A soccer theme party is sure to be a hit with all your soccer mad guests. Just remember to always have an indoor plan B just in case the rain makes an appearance.

Party Games – Memory and Detective Games

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

magnifying glass over a blue finger print

These games are most suitable for children aged 7 and over and can be played with any size party.  They give a twist on traditional party games and make older kids feel a bit more grown-up.

Line Up.

Split the group in half.  Line one half up in front of the other for 30 secs and then take them away.  One person in the line up needs then to have a small change made eg: removal of a watch or addition of a hair clip.  The line up are then brought back in and the other children have 30 secs to identify the accused, ie the person who has been altered.  They need to write down the name and the difference and hand over their paper with their own names on also.  Repeat the process with the second half of the children and this time try to change something totally different so as not to give the first group an advantage.  The people with the right answers are the winners.

Spot the Difference.

Bring the children into a room at the start of the party and let them have a look around.  Whilst they are playing other games, change things in the room around a bit, eg: swap lamps around, remove an ornament, turn the tv on etc.  A little while later let them all enter the room again with pen and paper and tell them how many differences there are.  First person to complete the differences correctly wins.

The Generation Game.

Anyone else remember the conveyor belt on this TV show??  There was always a cuddly toy!! Well this is your very own version.  On a tray put 20 items, these can be household goods, food etc or a mixture of things.  Put the tray on the kitchen table for 30 seconds, take it away and first person to write down the 20 items correctly wins.

Sh sh shoes!

As the children arrive give them a name sticker to place on the bottom of their shoes.  During the latter half of the party have them all remove their shoes and throw them in a basket or box.  Pull them out randomly and have the children write down who they think the shoes belong to.  Line the shoes up in the order in which you take them out so that you can correctly identify the memory master!

Audio Skills!

Put together a tape of just a snippet of current chart songs one after the other.  Line up the CD covers or some id for each song and get the children to write down the correct order in which they heard the songs.

The Princess and the Frog Themed Party

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Princess_and_the_Frog(1)

A friend of mine has twins, a boy and a girl.  It was their fifth birthday party recently and I wondered how she would manage with a party of mixed gender.  She did such a great job I thought I would share it here…

Invitations

She made all her own invitations.  The boys got an invite that looked like a Lily Pad and the girls one was like a tiara.  The girls were told to come as princesses, the boys as frogs.  Each princess invitation contained a home made badge with a number on it and each frog received a corresponding badge.

The Games, Ribbit!

When the children arrived, they had to pair up according to their badges and this was their “team” for the party.  They played musical chairs where the princesses had chairs decorated like thrones and the frogs had cardboard lily pads.  The last frog and princess left in the game won a prize for their team.  Another game was musical pairs where all the frogs danced in one half of the room and all the princesses in the other and when the music stopped they had to find their other half.  Last to do so was dismissed.

They played a novel game of hide and seek where first all the princesses hid and the frogs had to find their match.  First to do so won.  Then they reversed it with the frogs hiding.  Finally each frog had one minute to talk about a topic (films, TV programmes, school subjects) without mentioning the topic and their princess had to guess it.  Again the roles were then reversed.  The winning team was then decided and the couple sat in special thrones at the top of the table for the party food.

The boys and the girls loved the party and a lot of them decided that the opposite sex aren’t quite so bad after all!!!

Toy Story 3 Theme Party

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Toy Story 3 Theme PartyWith Toy Story 3 in the Cinemas, you can be guaranteed that lots of children will want  Buzz Lightyear, Woody and all the gang as the theme to their next party.  Merchandise for  movies like this is bound to be expensive so here’s how to do it without spending a fortune.

The Invitations.

Take advantage of the current nature of this theme and search for Toy Story colouring pages on the internet.  You can get your child to colour them in and then cut them out to stick on to some card for invites.

The Party Room.

You don’t need to buy anything expensive to decorate the room.  A good way to set this up in a practical way is to make a rocket for the centre of the room.  You can do this with a cardboard box and some extra card to make a cone shape for the top.  Have your child help you decorate it.  It could be painted and then decorated with cut outs of planets and stars or just covered in silver foil if you want to keep it really simple.  Cut out a window and cover the opening with black paper.  Then stick glow in the dark stickers of planets and stars on the black paper so that when the children are in the rocket it looks like they are looking out into space.

Next set up the party game areas.  These can be the planets all around the rocket.  For Planet  1 line a large shallow cardboard box or paddling pool with foil.  Print off some LGMs (little green men) from one of the many internet sites and stick a metal paperclip on to each one.  Then make a Claw (like a fishing rod) with a stick, some string and a magnet attached.  The object of this game will be to rescue the little green men with the magnet.

Planet  2 can be a colouring station where the children can colour in cut outs  of their favourite character (again printed from the internet) and when they are coloured, stick them on to a head band made from cardboard and they can wear them for the rest of the party.

Planet  3 will need a little bit of preparation beforehand.  Mix some baking soda with water to make a paste.  Cover some small plastic toys – you can pick up the Toy Story characters as plastic figurines fairly cheaply – one for each party reveller with the paste and bake in the oven for about 30 mins until the paste has hardened and resembles a rock.  Cut a hole in a cardboard box and stick a black sack to the opening.  Fill the black sack with the “space rocks” and let each child delve into the “black hole” to recover  one.  (Tip: If the party is for very little people tie a knot in the end of the black sack so that the children will be able to reach).

On Planet 4 have the space laboratory (a large container of vinegar).  Each child can put their space rock into the container and watch as it fizzes away leaving them with their very own character toy to take home.

Depending on the room you are using, you may need planet 5 to be the kitchen area as this will be the eating planet.  Use cookie cutters to make sandwiches in the shape of moons, stars and planets.  If you are very artistic you could even make them into rocket shapes.  Laminate some mini cut outs of characters and stick them to cocktail sausage sticks.  You can then put these into chunks of fruit or pretty much any food you want the kids to eat!!   You can make a very simple cake and just decorate it with rockets, cowboy hats etc and if you are not that talented with icing you can buy some little plastic ones and stick them on top.

Party bags.

Remember the children already have their plastic figure and the character headbands they made earlier for their party bag.  If you want to put in something really special you can make your very own colouring books with the Toy Story print-outs discussed earlier and make it very personal by typing a message on it to each child from your child thanking them for coming to the party.

Have a great Toy Story Party!!!  If there is a theme you would like included on our blog just let us know, e-mail karina@childrensparties.ie

Laura Kehoe For my Daughters 2nd Birthday, we pulled out all the stops. We had a Mickey Mouse themed party… her favourite cartoon. We painted an outside wall with a picture of Mickey Mouse and look whos 2. Almost a year on and my daughter still loves that pic. I ordered a mickey mouse piñata, party bags, mickey and minnie rice paper circles (which I will explain in a minute how I used them) napkins, paper plates and paper cups on ebay and they arrived just in time, I also made her a special cake shaped like the mickey mouse clubhouse, to see it follow the link http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/photo.php?pid=30832106&id=1556482888 I made a large sheet sponge cake as the base ie the garden and covered it in green icing I then made a small cola chocolate bun and covered it in red icing and moulded it in a semi circle shape and it became the body of the clubhouse. I got black icing and moulded it in a circle for the head and placed it on top of the body and covered 2 lolipops in dark chocolate for the ears of the clubhouse, I then made the rest of the clubhouse ie the leg and glove balloon out of icing and topped it all off with mickey, Minnie, goofy and Donald figures which I bought in a local toy store.
As for the rice paper I got some flat based cones and placed 2marshmallows in each then placed them in microwave for a minute or until the marshmallow rose to top then removed them and allowed to cool, I then melted some chocolate and put a spoonful in bun cases and placed the cones open side down on the bun cases and allowed chocolate to set, once set I peeled off the cases and stuck the rice paper on top of each prefect way to personalise a childs party or continue a theme.

Halloween Theme Parties

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

bcMy daughters birthdays at the end of Oct so we throw a halloween party for her. We tie yellow crime scene tape around the driveway, get them to lie down and draw around them in chalk then pour red colouring so it forms a pool with drips leading to the house.

Inside we put bloody footprints from the door to the downstairs loo where we splash red … See morefood colouring around the sink and put handprints on the tiled wall. Then we put spiders in the jelly.

Get a latex glove and fill it with water and red food colouring, tie it up and freeze then take off the glove and out into a bowl if drink. We put 2 tombstones in the front garden with a bloody hand coming out of the ground infront of one.

Ben 10 Birthday Party

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

bcFor my sons 6th birthday in September he invited everyone in his class, his nana and cousin and some friends from the estate who aren’t in his class.

It was a Ben 10 theme so I made the decorations- no aliens sign, happy birthday banner etc. and an alien head pinata which took about 3 days to make! All the kids got in a line to have a go ‘whacking’ it which they thought was great fun- even the girls.

We played musical chairs and pass the parcel to the Ben 10 theme tune which my husband downloaded and ‘pin the eye on the alien’. I put yellow and green food dye into white lemonade to make alien drinks which the kids thought were great.

My cake making skills aren’t great so I bought a cake and stuck a Ben 10 figure on it which my son could then keep and play with. I also wrote a B-E-N-1-0 on fairy cakes in yellow and green icing. Everyone had a brilliant time and a little boy even asked me to do his party the following week! lol.

Making The Alien Pinata

To make the alien head pinata I blew up a balloon then covered it in strips of newspaper (using a mixture of flour and water as a paste). Remember to leave a spacearound the part that ties so you can fill it.

When it has dried and is hard, burst the balloon and fill with sweets or treats. Cover the whole with strips of paper as before. When this has fully dried paint it to your taste.

My theme was Ben 10 so we made an alien head by painting the pinata green and adding bottle tops for eyes and a mouth- simple but effective!

Sports Day Birthday Party Theme

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

bcMy son will be six soon, I asked him year before last what he wanted to do.

He wanted to have a sports day. Gosh, the kids had great fun!! I went to the local jewellers and ordered medals, (more than enough for everyone) with Ben 2008 ehol weekend, engraved on back. We organized sack races, egg & spoon, running, musical chairs, muckiest face, pin … See Morethe tail on the donkey – all age appropriate, kids had a great time, everyone got a prize and didn’t even notice I didn’t get around to doing party bags!

Adults had chicken chausseur & rice/glaas of wine for non drivers – so everyone had a laugh. I did a video for parents as a collectable memory! Would be deeeeelighted to win as Ben’s party is b’ hol w’kend & two sisters have theirs in december so they treat this as their party too : ))))

Alice In Wonderland Party!

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Alice In Wonderland Theme Party

Whenever a revival of a classic like this arrives in the cinema, you can be guaranteed that a whole new generation will come to appreciate an old tale.  And so what better time to have an Alice in Wonderland Themed Party!

Don’t be late for this very important date …..

To start with you need to design some invitations.  You could buy some inexpensive playing cards and use the hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds to decorate.  At this time you need to decide if you want the children to dress as characters from the story or not.  If you get some round boxes like the ones you buy triangles of cheese in you can use them to make a very simple oversized fob watches and in the centre put the child’s name to make some festive name badges.

The Mad Hatters Tea Party…..

If you can find oversized playing cards in your local discount store you could use them as place mats or of course you could draw your own on some card.  Use lots of different coloured plates, cups etc and ask your friends if their children have some toy teapots you could borrow to pour drinks from.  The more assorted the sizes and colours are the better.  Finger sandwiches are a must and a variety of cakes in all different sizes.  If you buy or make some plain biscuits or cookies, make some icing and write “eat me” on them.

Anyone for croquet on the lawn…..

If you get the weather for it, you can usually buy a croquet set at any toyshop.  Some other games you can play with an “Alice” twist….. “The Queen of Heart Says” instead of “Simon Says”, “Pin the tail on the White Rabbit” – though use blue tack or something similar instead of a pin to avoid accidents and play pass the parcel with the “wrapping” being assorted shaped and sized boxes instead of paper.

Going home from wonderland bags…..

There is loads of Alice merchandise on the market at the moment but to add your own touch you could include a pretty “Alice” Hairband or even a copy of the book which can usually be bought in your local discount store along with other tales for €1.

Christmas Birthday Parties – A Whole Lot of Festive Fun!

Monday, December 14th, 2009

1078099_christmas__series_oneWhen a child’s birthday falls during the festive season, some children can feel sidelined by all the hullabaloo and celebrations of the season. They can sometimes feel that the holidays take away all the spotlight from them. But that shouldn’t be the case. In fact, the birthday boy or girl should feel lucky that his or her special day falls on this magical time of the year and that in itself should help the child feel very special indeed!

A Christmas theme is a great and easy option when choosing the perfect birthday party for your son or daughter. Christmas decorations are already in place and the house (if you are staging the party at home) will already have that festive party mood to it. The decorations are up, the tree looks great and everything is already in place for the perfect party.

Birthday party games at this time of year can be easy to organise and are often more popular that their equivalents at other times of the year. Musical chairs with “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus is coming to town” is a sure fire way to get the party going as is pass the festive parcel with the winner receiving a small Christmas themed prize. Arts and crafts games are also an excellent choice as the kids can create their own advent calendars, Christmas stocking designs and even Santa Hats out of little more than red card, glue and cotton wool. Pin the red nose on Rudolph are other great games that can be easily arranged. All you need is a poster of Rudolph and ping pong ball painted red with some double sided sticky tape and you have given a traditional birthday party game a festive fun twist.

How about a special festive bake your own party where the kids get to make and decorate their very own cookies for Santa. The kids will love being creative and messy and at the end will have a special treat for their party bags! Speaking of baking… it is important to remind everyone that despite the time of year, it is still your child’s birthday party and not a Christmas party so when it comes to the cake it is always best to bake or buy a birthday cake rather than a Christmas themed cake.

With the weather making outdoor activities next to impossible, many parents make use of their local party venues and adventure centres at this time of year. All of these venues will usually be fully decorated so creating that Christmas feeling will be easy however we would suggest that bookings are made well in advance, as this can often prove to be the busiest time of year for many of these venues.

High School Musical Theme Party On A Budget – Part One

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

6469_high-school-musical-group-400First let me make a statement. I do not like High School Musical. I simply don’t understand it. Did the kids in your secondary school burst into song at the drop of a hat? Nope, mine neither. However, I guess it is every generation’s duty not to understand what their children see in certain music or movies and my children certainly love High School Musical.

The trials and tribulations of Troy, Gabriella, Chad, Sharpie and the rest of the crew are not only The Disney Channel’s most successful movie of all time, but it has also emerged as one of the most sought after children’s party themes out there and even though I knew it was coming, the day my daughter told me that she wanted a HSM theme party was a day that sent me into a panic. “How” I thought,” can I arrange a High School Musical party without spending a fortune!?”. What I quickly found out is that whilst there is thousands of pre made HSM party packs for sale everywhere you look, there is a much more affordable and fun way to give your child the party she deserves without breaking the bank. What did I do? I simply made my own…. and here’s how!

Step One – The Invitations.

A children’s party’s theme is proclaimed when the invitations arrive, so this is the first key area you will need to get right to ensure your guests know the theme in advance.. Basketball themed invites work great for the boys and star cut-outs are perfect for the girls and luckily I was able to find great themed invites right here by creating a Party Page.

Step Two – Setting The Stage…. Literally

If you are as familiar with the Wildcats as I am, you will already know the three main areas you will need to recreate – the cafeteria for all the dining, the stage for all your singing and dancing games and finally the basketball court for all other games.

Setting up the cafeteria is a breeze! All you need is a dining room or area where you can put up a couple of trestle tables. Since HSM is so popular these days you can pick up themed cups, plates and napkins in any party supplies shop, but for authenticity, go with plain cutlery and plates as well as plastic trays to create that high school cafeteria feel.  Print out some banners saying things like “Go Wildcats!”  that can be hung around the room and make a notice board with some notices about auditions and basketball and your party will soon start to get that HSM feel.

Creating the stage area is a lot easier than you may think. The first thing you will need (and this, I have been told, is a requirement folks) is a red carpet which can easily be made from some red inexpensive fabric, readily available from most department stores. Once the red carpet is in place and you have finished testing it out yourself whilst daydreaming about walking into a movie premiere, you will need to work on the stage and background itself. Create some cardboard stars and decorate them with gold and silver paint and glitter before hanging them from the ceiling. For that extra touch of fun, write each of the guest’s names on the stars. Create stage lighting by tipping two lamps with their shades removed at an angle and covering them with some black cloth – just ensure that the cloth isn’t touching the bulb for obvious reasons. Want to go a step further?

Creating a mini basketball court can be just as simple, regardless of whether it’s indoors or outdoors. Basketball hoops for both indoors and outdoors can be purchased quite cheaply from most major toy stores in Ireland and along with some banners with HSM slogans such as “Go Cats!” which can be printed from your computer are pretty much the only things you need to set up your HSM basketball court  set.
