Soccer Stars Theme Parties

September 3rd, 2010
For all of you with soccer mad kids in the house I’m sure you already know that the Premier League football season is back in full swing. And if you have a birthday party to plan over the coming weeks, why not take advantage of your child’s first love by holding a soccer themes party. It’s fun, easy to organise and wont cost you an exorbitant transfer fee!
The Decorations
Decorating for a kids soccer party couldn’t be easier! Using scarves and some home made banners you can easily create that stadium effect in your home or garden. To add that extra touch to proceedings, why not purchase some large silver paper and cut out your very own Premier League and European Cup trophy.
You can find some inspiration and models to work from here: http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/exhibitions/onlyagame/graphics/cup.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.artinliverpool.com/blog/2008/12/liverpool-museums-european-cup-competition/&usg=__rfG4yiUM_B07DL2yMYfeH70cAY0=&h=256&w=360&sz=17&hl=en&start=36&zoom=1&tbnid=zC_hnE8PT_YsSM:&tbnh=161&tbnw=213&prev=/images%3Fq%3Deuropean%2Bcup%2Btrophy%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1C1GGLS_enIE352IE352%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D685%26tbs%3Disch:10,1400&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=832&vpy=226&dur=4281&hovh=189&hovw=266&tx=44&ty=85&ei=iaiATK73CsK5jAed0KlM&oei=faiATIv6G4We4QaPwq3TCw&esq=3&page=3&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:16,s:36&biw=1280&bih=685 & here: http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http://www.talkfootball.co.uk/images/719b21/23_premier-league-trophy.png%3F1187105304&imgrefurl=http://www.talkfootball.co.uk/guides/football_major_comps.html&usg=__Z0aQZQPidvaNePuBR6t5hBVsIEQ=&h=333&w=234&sz=9&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=ksJ0aznIKOb2hM:&tbnh=175&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpremier%2Bleague%2Btrophy%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1C1GGLS_enIE352IE352%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D685%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=634&vpy=98&dur=4290&hovh=266&hovw=187&tx=92&ty=95&ei=XKiATNyPO4mB4QayyoHTCw&oei=XKiATNyPO4mB4QayyoHTCw&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0
The Games
As well as the obvious game of football there are many other traditional party games that you can give a unique soccer twist to.
Penalty Shoot Out Comp
Line the kids up into two teams and set up a goal at one end of the garden (away from all windows!) using anything from jumpers to 2 broom handles placed into the ground. The goal of this game is to be the first team to score twenty penalties…. with no goal keeper in goal!
Sounds easy? Not quite!
When each penalty taker approaches the penalty spot they must be blind folded and spun around three times just to make things more difficult!
Pin The Tail
Bad weather ruining your chances of playing games outdoors? Then this variation on the classic children’s party game is sure to help bring your party to life. Cut the ball from a poster of your child’s favourite player and let all the party guests take turns trying to pin the ball in the right place.
The Road To Wembley
The Road To Wembley is a popular participation game played by Sky Sport’s Soccer Am TV show which can be easily adapted for your soccer theme party. Place a bin at the end of your garden or if possible, hang a tyre from a tree. The players line up in 2 teams at the opposite end of the garden and must try and kick the ball into the bin or through the tyre. The winners are the team that get the most balls into the target within 90 seconds. For more fun, bring multiple footballs and watch the craziness happen!
The Treats & Prizes
Whilst the half time orange slices are definitely a must, we all know that the kids have come expecting sweet treats! Football themes cakes are readily available and football team themed cakes are available in some Tesco bakeries. Another treat can double as your prizes for the games – chocolate medals!
A soccer theme party is sure to be a hit with all your soccer mad guests. Just remember to always have an indoor plan B just in case the rain makes an appearance.
Oh…. an mind those windows!

Party Games – Memory and Detective Games

August 28th, 2010

magnifying glass over a blue finger print

These games are most suitable for children aged 7 and over and can be played with any size party.  They give a twist on traditional party games and make older kids feel a bit more grown-up.

Line Up.

Split the group in half.  Line one half up in front of the other for 30 secs and then take them away.  One person in the line up needs then to have a small change made eg: removal of a watch or addition of a hair clip.  The line up are then brought back in and the other children have 30 secs to identify the accused, ie the person who has been altered.  They need to write down the name and the difference and hand over their paper with their own names on also.  Repeat the process with the second half of the children and this time try to change something totally different so as not to give the first group an advantage.  The people with the right answers are the winners.

Spot the Difference.

Bring the children into a room at the start of the party and let them have a look around.  Whilst they are playing other games, change things in the room around a bit, eg: swap lamps around, remove an ornament, turn the tv on etc.  A little while later let them all enter the room again with pen and paper and tell them how many differences there are.  First person to complete the differences correctly wins.

The Generation Game.

Anyone else remember the conveyor belt on this TV show??  There was always a cuddly toy!! Well this is your very own version.  On a tray put 20 items, these can be household goods, food etc or a mixture of things.  Put the tray on the kitchen table for 30 seconds, take it away and first person to write down the 20 items correctly wins.

Sh sh shoes!

As the children arrive give them a name sticker to place on the bottom of their shoes.  During the latter half of the party have them all remove their shoes and throw them in a basket or box.  Pull them out randomly and have the children write down who they think the shoes belong to.  Line the shoes up in the order in which you take them out so that you can correctly identify the memory master!

Audio Skills!

Put together a tape of just a snippet of current chart songs one after the other.  Line up the CD covers or some id for each song and get the children to write down the correct order in which they heard the songs.

Party Favourites from the Past …. Butterfly Cakes.

August 27th, 2010

Butterfly Cakes

These were one of my favourites as a child though they seem to be a forgotten little gem of a party cake these days …. so lets revive the Butterfly Cake!!

Ingredients:

5oz unsalted butter or margarine, softened

5oz caster sugar

6oz self-raising flour

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

To decorate:

Fresh cream, whipped or canned spray cream

Raspberry or Strawberry jam

Icing sugar

Method:

1.  Preheat oven to Gas 4, 180C, 350F and place 12 paper cases in a bun tray.

2.  Put all the ingredients (except the decoration ingredients) in a mixing bowl and beat with hand-held electric whisk for 1 – 2 mins until texture is light and creamy.  Divide the mixture into the 12 paper cases.

3.  Bake for 18-20 mins until risen and firm to touch.  Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

4.  When cooled completely, use a small sharp knife to cut out a deep disc shape from the centre of each cake.  Spread a layer of jam in the hollow and top with the whipped cream.

5.  Cut each of the scooped out pieces in half and place on top of the cream at a 45 degree angle so they resemble butterfly wings.  Finally, lightly sift a small amount of icing sugar over the whole batch.

Practical Party Bag Fillers

August 26th, 2010

party bags

It can be hard to get the balance right with a party bag.  You want the children to love it but you don’t want the parents to see it as more junk coming into the house, so here’s a few practical ideas…

  1. Small packs of crayons and colouring pencils.  These are always handy to keep children occupied.  Try coupling them with a homemade colouring book made from internet print outs for a relatively inexpensive party bag.
  2. School essentials – a pencil, sharpener, rubber or notebook for example.
  3. Bath time fun – novelty sponges, rubber ducks or little soaps.
  4. Useful stickers – rather than sheets of novelty stickers, why not give them alphabet stickers that could be used to name their belongings?
  5. Colourful socks,  gloves, sunglasses or sunhats!
  6. A plastic beaker, decorative straw or theme plate.  These can all be bought very cheaply and remember if you are bulk buying, ask if you might get a discount.
  7. Craft goodies such as card making kits.  You need only buy a few packs and divide the contents between the party goers.
  8. Instead of packing the bag with sweets, crisps and chocolate why not make your own sweet treats and put one in each bag.  Watch out for recipes here for frosted banana bars and chocolate marshmallow wedges……

The Princess and the Frog Themed Party

August 24th, 2010

Princess_and_the_Frog(1)

A friend of mine has twins, a boy and a girl.  It was their fifth birthday party recently and I wondered how she would manage with a party of mixed gender.  She did such a great job I thought I would share it here…

Invitations

She made all her own invitations.  The boys got an invite that looked like a Lily Pad and the girls one was like a tiara.  The girls were told to come as princesses, the boys as frogs.  Each princess invitation contained a home made badge with a number on it and each frog received a corresponding badge.

The Games, Ribbit!

When the children arrived, they had to pair up according to their badges and this was their “team” for the party.  They played musical chairs where the princesses had chairs decorated like thrones and the frogs had cardboard lily pads.  The last frog and princess left in the game won a prize for their team.  Another game was musical pairs where all the frogs danced in one half of the room and all the princesses in the other and when the music stopped they had to find their other half.  Last to do so was dismissed.

They played a novel game of hide and seek where first all the princesses hid and the frogs had to find their match.  First to do so won.  Then they reversed it with the frogs hiding.  Finally each frog had one minute to talk about a topic (films, TV programmes, school subjects) without mentioning the topic and their princess had to guess it.  Again the roles were then reversed.  The winning team was then decided and the couple sat in special thrones at the top of the table for the party food.

The boys and the girls loved the party and a lot of them decided that the opposite sex aren’t quite so bad after all!!!

Back To School Competition

July 19th, 2010

The last thing any of us want to think about in July is the dreaded first few days of school in September. So how about we give you something to look forward to?? Wouldn’t it be nice to win a bouncy castle for the first weekend of Back to School. Your children could be having bouncy fun on the 4th / 5th September and they will owe it all to you. But as parents we have decided that to win this prize you will need to go back to school too!! We are going to test your English and Mathematical skills!

Throughout each day beginning 19th July we will give you an anagram and a number on facebook. When you decipher the anagram it will give you a clue to an advert here on our website. Find the advert and in it you will find numbers. Then in true Carol Vorderman fashion you will need to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to find a way for all of the numbers given to make the original number given to you with the anagram. Then you will have to be the first person to post the link to the advert with the full mathematical equation and you will be entered into the draw. We will have to take the first person that posts the correct answer in accordance with Facebook so as to avoid cheating!!

Here is a quick example to help you – The Facebook Post: kecucap 100

The anagram is cupcake so you would need to find a cupcake advert. When you find the correct one you would find the following numbers hidden in the advert – 9: 8; 4; 2; 1. You need to make an equation using all the numbers that will give you the answer 100. One possible answer here would be 9+1=10 and 8+4-2=10 and 10 x 10 = 100 Of course there may be many ways to solve these and you can give us any one as long as it is right!!!

So pull up those socks and sharpen those pencils, the exam is about to begin……

Competition will run from July 19th to August 6th and the winner will be drawn and announced on 7th August. The prize is a bouncy castle for 4th and 5th September 2010.

Toy Story 3 Theme Party

July 12th, 2010

Toy Story 3 Theme PartyWith Toy Story 3 in the Cinemas, you can be guaranteed that lots of children will want  Buzz Lightyear, Woody and all the gang as the theme to their next party.  Merchandise for  movies like this is bound to be expensive so here’s how to do it without spending a fortune.

The Invitations.

Take advantage of the current nature of this theme and search for Toy Story colouring pages on the internet.  You can get your child to colour them in and then cut them out to stick on to some card for invites.

The Party Room.

You don’t need to buy anything expensive to decorate the room.  A good way to set this up in a practical way is to make a rocket for the centre of the room.  You can do this with a cardboard box and some extra card to make a cone shape for the top.  Have your child help you decorate it.  It could be painted and then decorated with cut outs of planets and stars or just covered in silver foil if you want to keep it really simple.  Cut out a window and cover the opening with black paper.  Then stick glow in the dark stickers of planets and stars on the black paper so that when the children are in the rocket it looks like they are looking out into space.

Next set up the party game areas.  These can be the planets all around the rocket.  For Planet  1 line a large shallow cardboard box or paddling pool with foil.  Print off some LGMs (little green men) from one of the many internet sites and stick a metal paperclip on to each one.  Then make a Claw (like a fishing rod) with a stick, some string and a magnet attached.  The object of this game will be to rescue the little green men with the magnet.

Planet  2 can be a colouring station where the children can colour in cut outs  of their favourite character (again printed from the internet) and when they are coloured, stick them on to a head band made from cardboard and they can wear them for the rest of the party.

Planet  3 will need a little bit of preparation beforehand.  Mix some baking soda with water to make a paste.  Cover some small plastic toys – you can pick up the Toy Story characters as plastic figurines fairly cheaply – one for each party reveller with the paste and bake in the oven for about 30 mins until the paste has hardened and resembles a rock.  Cut a hole in a cardboard box and stick a black sack to the opening.  Fill the black sack with the “space rocks” and let each child delve into the “black hole” to recover  one.  (Tip: If the party is for very little people tie a knot in the end of the black sack so that the children will be able to reach).

On Planet 4 have the space laboratory (a large container of vinegar).  Each child can put their space rock into the container and watch as it fizzes away leaving them with their very own character toy to take home.

Depending on the room you are using, you may need planet 5 to be the kitchen area as this will be the eating planet.  Use cookie cutters to make sandwiches in the shape of moons, stars and planets.  If you are very artistic you could even make them into rocket shapes.  Laminate some mini cut outs of characters and stick them to cocktail sausage sticks.  You can then put these into chunks of fruit or pretty much any food you want the kids to eat!!   You can make a very simple cake and just decorate it with rockets, cowboy hats etc and if you are not that talented with icing you can buy some little plastic ones and stick them on top.

Party bags.

Remember the children already have their plastic figure and the character headbands they made earlier for their party bag.  If you want to put in something really special you can make your very own colouring books with the Toy Story print-outs discussed earlier and make it very personal by typing a message on it to each child from your child thanking them for coming to the party.

Have a great Toy Story Party!!!  If there is a theme you would like included on our blog just let us know, e-mail karina@childrensparties.ie

bcMy sister did this for her son’s 8th birthday party last summer when bouncy castle & outdoor game plans went out the window with pouring rain!!!

She got all the board games she could fiond in the house for two players such as connect 4, guess who etc and she pinned a scoreboard up on the wall.

All the kids played each other in the various games and she gave out bars of chocolate and lollipops as prizes.

To make sure everyone won something she gave out prizes for sportsmanship etc also.

Went down a treat!

Treasure Hunt

June 15th, 2010

bcParty tip – Treasure hunts! Clue difficulty depends on the age of the kids of course!

Drawings of places make the best clues and prizes for all at the end of the treasure hunt ensures no tears :-) Up to 10 clues, each location holds the next clue.

Spread them out well and alternate between front and back garden to get them moving, e.g. beside garden shed, gate, garden furniture, letter box, front door etc. if its raining bring the hunt indoors of course :-)

Birthday Cake Decorating

June 15th, 2010

bcDecorating cakes – fold a piece of paper that’s bigger than your cake in half. Draw half a shape against the fold – stars, hearts, fairy wings etc., and cut it out.

Unfold the paper and place it on your cake – works best on brownies or other flat topped cakes and sift cocoa over a pale cake or icing sugar over a dark cake to give you a pretty decoration.

You could also sprinkle with a little caster sugar mixed with food colouring to make it more colourful!

Mickey Mouse Theme Party

June 15th, 2010
Laura Kehoe For my Daughters 2nd Birthday, we pulled out all the stops. We had a Mickey Mouse themed party… her favourite cartoon. We painted an outside wall with a picture of Mickey Mouse and look whos 2. Almost a year on and my daughter still loves that pic. I ordered a mickey mouse piñata, party bags, mickey and minnie rice paper circles (which I will explain in a minute how I used them) napkins, paper plates and paper cups on ebay and they arrived just in time, I also made her a special cake shaped like the mickey mouse clubhouse, to see it follow the link http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/photo.php?pid=30832106&id=1556482888 I made a large sheet sponge cake as the base ie the garden and covered it in green icing I then made a small cola chocolate bun and covered it in red icing and moulded it in a semi circle shape and it became the body of the clubhouse. I got black icing and moulded it in a circle for the head and placed it on top of the body and covered 2 lolipops in dark chocolate for the ears of the clubhouse, I then made the rest of the clubhouse ie the leg and glove balloon out of icing and topped it all off with mickey, Minnie, goofy and Donald figures which I bought in a local toy store.
As for the rice paper I got some flat based cones and placed 2marshmallows in each then placed them in microwave for a minute or until the marshmallow rose to top then removed them and allowed to cool, I then melted some chocolate and put a spoonful in bun cases and placed the cones open side down on the bun cases and allowed chocolate to set, once set I peeled off the cases and stuck the rice paper on top of each prefect way to personalise a childs party or continue a theme.

Halloween Theme Parties

June 15th, 2010

bcMy daughters birthdays at the end of Oct so we throw a halloween party for her. We tie yellow crime scene tape around the driveway, get them to lie down and draw around them in chalk then pour red colouring so it forms a pool with drips leading to the house.

Inside we put bloody footprints from the door to the downstairs loo where we splash red … See morefood colouring around the sink and put handprints on the tiled wall. Then we put spiders in the jelly.

Get a latex glove and fill it with water and red food colouring, tie it up and freeze then take off the glove and out into a bowl if drink. We put 2 tombstones in the front garden with a bloody hand coming out of the ground infront of one.

Pin The Tail!

June 15th, 2010

bcFor my daughter’s princess themed party we played a slightly different version of pin the tail on the donkey – pin the tiara on the princess.

The kids loved it.

We also had a bit of an adult take on this recently for my husbands birthday party – we had a big pic of Thierry Henry and a football. The person who pinned the ball closest to his hand won!!
